We Have the Power to Impact Our Future, and We’re Doing Something About It

The constitution of Nepal, 2015 is progressive and institutes several positive elements for the up lift mend of women in the country. The two main provisions of the constitution are privilege for women. First, ensuring rights of women as a fundamental right (FR) is very strong constitutional provision for empowerment of women. Second, the constitutional provision setting aside 33% representation of women in Nepal’s all state mechanisms is a major breakthrough.

Although the constitution has ensured several rights of women along with special reservation for them, these provisions would be worthless unless women are aware of them and exercise these right and privileges. They need to know what constitutional rights of women are, how they get access of them and how these rights are exercised.

According to the census report of 2011, women occupy 51.54% of total population of Nepal and 60% of them in Rural area are illiterate. Even when working in the same environment and surrounding they are compelled to survive in half wages to that of men. Still there exists certain cultures and temple where presence of women has been prohibited. The bitter truth is, Nepalese society has given the tag of 2nd level to women. In order to eradicate this discrimination and build a society of equity and harmony, awareness against the pain, grief, violence, illiteracy, poverty and old culture should be spread by strengthening education, financial, legal and health sector and by encouraging them for their empowerment and also protecting the right to independence, freedom and human rights.

A large number of Nepali women are illiterate and semi-literate. Many of them are limited to the household works. Due to the low participation in political, economic and social activities, they are unaware about what women’s right the constitution has assured. Understanding the constitutional rights and exercising them is beyond their access. Even in Capital city i.e. Kathmandu, most of the women are unaware about their constitutional rights.

Empowerment of women is very important aspect for equitable and just society. For this, women’s participation in every sector of state mechanism is needed. It can be ensured only if they are aware of their constitutional rights and privilege. Thus, raising awareness to women about constitutional right and procedure of exercising these rights is one aspect of women’s empowerment. For this, awareness raising training program would be an effective medium.

Considering the same fact, Taramandal Mahila Sashaktikaran Abhiyan (TMSA) has designed this project to conduct a three-day awareness training program on constitutional rights of women for the women of all 32 wards of Kathmandu Metropolitan city.
